Garden

The approximately 1.4 ha HORTVS garden complex was created as a private garden starting in 2006, which we are happy to share with you during our opening hours.

After becoming aware of the very different soil structures on this property (the Rhine flowed here about eight to ten thousand years ago), the formerly neglected garden land was the perfect place for me to create a new garden. The different soil types, nutrient concentrations, and light conditions allow us to cultivate a huge range of diverse plants from across the temperate zone. Over the course of about two decades, this has resulted in a plant collection with over 4,000 different taxa.

The basic layout and design concept follows a clearly structured planning idea, conceived as an interplay of geometry and natural forms. The interplay between the well-proportioned design language and the emphatically natural plantings guarantees outstanding garden views year-round.

Plant selection always follows the existing site conditions (soil, light, microclimate, humidity). We reject significant changes, such as soil replacement.

The garden is cultivated strictly according to organic principles. This means that neither artificial fertilizers nor pesticides are used.

Our decision to refrain from artificially watering the garden, or to do so only minimally, is our contribution to responsible, modern, and future-oriented gardening.

Thus, a refuge was created in the densely populated urban area, which we understand as a meeting place between people and nature. Today, HORTVS is a pastoral haven of balance and a habitat for thousands of organisms.
