Production

Staudengärtnerei Peter Janke

Our herbaceous perennials are produced in small quantities with much time and effort. They are not breeded in overheated green houses and get all the time they need for healthy growth. Thus, they are optimally prepared for a long and healthy life in the garden.

Mail order: Unfortunately we do not offer mail order of our plants.

Meeting of minds, Gardens Illustrated-Magazine October 2022
Gardens Illustrated – Issue October 2022

When I made my vision of a garden come true and created the HORTVS in Hilden, I hoped with every ground-breaking, with every plant that contributes to the overall appearance, that this garden will become a meeting place. A meeting place for people and plants as well as a meeting place for garden enthusiasts among themselves.

This vision became real, also due to the numerous national and international reports about my HORTVS.

Range of Plants

Staudengärtnerei Peter Janke

In our perennial nursery we specialise in the production and breeding of exceptional plants, shrubs and annuals.

We offer a wide range of garden plants comprising more then 1.200 species, from sun-loving gravel garden and prairie perennials to the great variety of diverse grasses to selected beauties for the shade garden.

In our gardenshop you will find attractive floristry products as well as miscellaneous useful and decorative things for house and garden. Corresponding to our gardening philosophy we offer especially natural cut flowers, reflecting the current seasons and produced bei regional cut flowers nurseries.

The garden photographer Jürgen Becker, who has been internationally awarded several times, has  accompanied the development of my garden for more than ten years now. I consider our cooperation as a great gift.

My Garden throughout the Changes of general Attitudes and of Climate

Peter Janke: Mein Garten im Wandel

Ecological / Low-Maintenance / Stylish

Mein Garten im Wandel des Zeitgeistes und des Klimas / My Garden throughout the Changes of general Attitudes and of Climate (Book only available in German language)

Gardens are constantly undergoing changes, expecially due to seasonal alterations. But future confronts us with further questions: How can we deal with increasing global warming? Can we do more to help insects survive? What if the groundwater level keeps falling or if there will be a growing shortage of water? How can I tend my garden in such a way that I will be able to do it, even when I get older? Will my garden, as it is, still look beautiful when it continues developing? And how are we supposed to assess, handle and prepare for the multiple and complex transformation processes in a garden?

    Dogs in the Hortvs
Gardens and dogs are not really compatible, therefore our Hortvs very much appreciates dog- free days.

Wheelchairs and Prams in the Hortvs
About the half of our garden is not or only restrictedly accessible to wheelchairs and prams. In the gravel garden this is due to the gravel covered paths and in the woodland garden the trails are unfortunately too narrow. However, even for wheelchair users a visit of the Hortvs is worthwile, since a great many of the beds and plant combinations are accessible across the lawn areas. This restricted visit to our garden remains of course free of charge for the wheelchair user and an accompanying person.

    Parking in the Hortvs
During our weekly opening hours you find parking space in our yard or on the lawn area marked as parking site. During our events and in the main season the parking spaces available in the Hortvs are often not sufficient. It takes about ten minutes to walk to the Hortvs from the free parking spaces in the neighbouring residential streets (e.g. Richard-Wagner-Straße) to the south or from the industrial area to the north.

We look forward to your visit!

    Columns

For several years already I have been regularly writing garden columns for garden magazines and for the daily press. Please find below a selection of my texts (only available in German language):

    Hortvs Collection

I have been interested in and inspired by herbaceous perennials ever since I started gardening. Thus, together with my husband, Michael Frinke, I have collected about four thousand different perennials, grasses and geophytes for the hortvs up to now. In the course. In the course of time some species have become our favorites.

This is why we refer to  the following species as Hortvs-Collection:

    • Helleborus (all wild species, the famous collection of Helen Ballard and our own hybrids)
    • Galanthus (almost all wild species, about 500 cultivars and about 200 selections which have not been named so far )
    • Polygonatum (about 40 different species and varieties)
    • Thalictrum (about 40 different species and varieties)
    • Arisaema (about 25 different species)
    • Libertia (20 different species)
    • Erythronium (30 different species)
    • Agapanthus  (55 different species)
    • Sempervivum and Jovibarba (about 180 different species)
    • Epimedium (about 50 different species )
    • Miscanthus (about 30 different species)
    • Ferns (about 100 different species and varieties)

We very much aim to produce more and more of these difficult to breed plants, also for sale. Visitors to our nursery already find a wide choice of the genera of Helleborus, Thalictrum, Sempervivum, Miscanthus, Epimedium and hardy ferns.

    Hortvs

    Hortvs Peter Janke

Hortvs (Latin for “garden”) is the epitome of our company.

It simply summarizes what we care about.

Moreover, it stands for our gardenshop, where you find cut flowers as well as decorative and useful accessories for the garden during our opening hours. And it also denotes our perennial nursery, where we offer you selected garden plants and rare herbaceous perennials.

In the gardener’s paradise England I was given the honour of participating in the gardening of Mrs. Beth Chatto, the grande dame of English gardening culture. Inspired and spurred by these experiences, I arrived at the decision, that gardening on such a high level should be introduced to Germany too.

In addition to my garden planning, however, I wanted to create an own garden, which lives up to this idea.

Soon my first garden, which was only a relict of the former nursery of my grandmother Melanie Thomas, became to small for my gardening ambitions.

For this reason I moved together with my family In Mai 2005 and we found our new domicile as an overgrown washeland.

By now a garden has come into being according my ideas.

It consists of many different areas.

Thus, in a humid, almost boggy corner, we created a water garden with three natural ponds.

A large, sandy and dry field was turned into an all year round attractive gravel garden.

Ancient oaks and beeches shield the woodland garden.

An alley of formally planted Mediterranean cypresses guides the way to the house, which is flanked by a formal garden and other individual designed garden areas.

You are cordially invited to visit our garden during opening hours.

We very much look forward to your visit,

    Yours,

    Peter Janke
